The Star SP742 Ethernet impact receipt printer is a 9-pin dot-matrix kitchen printer built for hot, greasy hospitality environments where thermal printing fails. It prints durable two-colour dockets on plain bond paper, includes an auto-cutter, and shares one printer across multiple POS terminals over a wired Ethernet (LAN) network.

One printer, the whole kitchen
Plug the SP742 into your network, assign it an IP address, and add it in your POS as a LAN printer. Every terminal on the floor can then fire orders to the one shared kitchen printer. Drop a fresh bond roll into the clamshell, click in an RC700 ribbon, and the auto-cutter tears each docket cleanly. Because it prints by impact rather than heat, dockets stay sharp and legible right beside the grills and steamers.

Frequently asked questions
Why use an impact printer in the kitchen instead of a thermal one?
Thermal receipts darken and fade in heat and steam, so they struggle next to grills and pass counters. The SP742 uses impact dot-matrix printing on plain bond paper, which stays clearly readable in hot, humid, greasy kitchens, prints a copy (up to 3-ply), and uses red as well as black to make orders stand out, which is why impact printers are the kitchen standard.
Which ribbon does it use, and is one included?
The SP742 uses a Star RC700 ribbon: RC700B for black, or RC700BR for two-colour black/red. A ribbon is not included with this model, so add one below along with bond paper rolls.
Will this work with my POS software or system?
It connects over Ethernet and uses Star and ESC/POS commands, so it works as a kitchen or receipt printer with a wide range of POS systems. As with any POS hardware, some cloud POS apps (for example Square) only support specific models, so check this printer against your POS provider's supported-hardware list, or contact our team on 1300 026 062 and we'll confirm compatibility with your setup before you buy.
What paper does it use?
76 mm (3-inch) plain bond paper rolls, not thermal paper. The common 76 x 76 mm roll fits, including 2-ply or 3-ply when you need copies.
How do I set it up on the network?
Connect it by Ethernet and assign an IP address using Star's configuration utility (or your DHCP server), then add it in your POS as a network/LAN printer. Call our team on 1300 026 062 if you'd like a hand.
Application use cases
Restaurant & cafe kitchens: durable two-colour dockets that survive heat and steam, shared across terminals over Ethernet
Bars & QSR: fast 8.9 lines/sec order printing through a noisy rush
Dry cleaners & laundries: hard-wearing tags and multi-part tickets that hold up through cleaning, pressing and steam
Networked multi-terminal venues: one shared printer for several POS stations
Don't forget your consumables
The SP742 needs a Star RC700 ribbon (RC700BR for two-colour black/red) plus 76 x 76 mm plain bond rolls, both ordered separately. It does not use thermal paper.
The Star SP742 Ethernet (SP742ME) is a 9-pin impact dot-matrix receipt and kitchen printer that prints two-colour (black/red) dockets on 76 mm plain bond paper at up to 8.9 lines per second, supports up to 3-ply copies, includes an auto-cutter and a drawer kick-out port, and connects over Ethernet so multiple POS terminals can share one networked kitchen printer. It uses a Star RC700 ribbon (RC700B black or RC700BR black/red) and plain bond rolls rather than thermal paper, making it the durable choice for hot, steamy, greasy hospitality kitchens where thermal print fades.
