The Star Micronics mC-Print3 MCP31CBI is a compact 80mm front-feed thermal receipt printer for retail and hospitality counters, supplied in black as MCP31CBI-BK and in white as MCP31CBI-WT. It is the Bluetooth model in the mC-Print3 range, so alongside Ethernet, USB and a Lightning USB port that connects straight to an Apple device, it pairs wirelessly with a tablet point of sale. Two USB host ports let the printer act as a hub for a cash drawer, barcode scanner or customer display, and Star CloudPRNT is built in for printing from a web or cloud POS with no local terminal. The whole thing measures 132 x 140 x 125 mm and carries an IPX2 splash proof rating, which is why it turns up as often in kitchens and behind bars as it does on a shop counter.

Do you need Bluetooth? This is the Bluetooth model. If your terminal is cabled to the network or plugged in over USB, the mC-Print3 MCP31CI is the same printer without the Bluetooth radio and costs less. For Wi-Fi rather than Bluetooth, see the Star TSP143IV UEWB.

Why choose the mC-Print3 MCP31CBI

Bluetooth for tablet POSPairs wirelessly with a tablet or phone point of sale, so the printer can sit where the counter needs it rather than where the cable reaches.
Lightning port for Apple devicesA Lightning USB port connects directly to an iPad or iPhone, which keeps the tablet charged and printing over one cable instead of needing a dock.
Two USB host portsHub functionality drives select USB peripherals plugged into the printer, including a cash drawer, barcode scanner and customer display, so one network drop runs the whole counter.
IPX2 splash proof buildSoft operating switches, a raised control board and insect prevention make this a printer you can put in a kitchen, behind a bar or inside a kiosk.
Star CloudPRNT built inPrint from a web server anywhere in the world with no local POS terminal, which is how online ordering and remote docket printing are handled.

Splash proof, front feed, front loading

Designed for hospitality counters

The mC-Print3 is built for the places a receipt printer usually struggles. The chassis carries an IPX2 splash proof rating with soft operating switches instead of exposed mechanical buttons, a raised control board that keeps the electronics clear of any liquid that does get in, and insect prevention around the openings. Paper loads from the front and feeds from the front, so the printer can sit under a shelf or inside a kiosk enclosure with nothing above it. A receipt decurl function delivers flat receipts rather than curled ones, a paper end sensor warns you before a roll runs out, and a 2mm top margin trims paper waste on every docket.

Black or white, same printer

Black and white are the same printer at the same price, so pick the one that disappears into your counter. Choose the colour above before adding to cart: black ships as MCP31CBI-BK and white as MCP31CBI-WT. White tends to suit bright, minimal fit-outs and Apple-based counters, while black hides marks better in a busy kitchen or bar. Nothing else changes between them, including the interfaces, the IPX2 rating and the warranty.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the MCP31CBI and the MCP31CI?
Bluetooth, and nothing else. The MCP31CBI has a Bluetooth radio; the MCP31CI does not. Both models give you Ethernet, USB and a Lightning USB port for direct Apple connection, both are Star CloudPRNT ready, both are IPX2 splash proof and both print at up to 250 mm per second. If your point of sale is cabled, the MCP31CI saves you money for identical print performance.
Does it come in white as well as black?
Yes. Use the colour selector above to choose Black (part number MCP31CBI-BK) or White (MCP31CBI-WT). The price is the same either way and the specification is identical.
Can I plug an iPad straight into it?
Yes. The mC-Print3 has a Lightning USB port that connects directly to an Apple device, so an iPad can print over a cable and stay charged at the same time. You can also pair over Bluetooth on this model if you would rather keep the tablet free to move. Note that Lightning is the older Apple connector, so a USB-C iPad will need Bluetooth, Ethernet or an adapter.
What can I connect to the two USB host ports?
The printer includes hub functionality for select USB peripherals plugged into it, which Star lists as a cash drawer, a scanner and a customer display. In practice that means one Ethernet cable or one Bluetooth pairing can run the whole counter instead of separate connections for each device. Check your specific peripherals with us before you order, because support is limited to compatible models.
Is it safe to use in a kitchen or behind a bar?
That is exactly what it was designed for. The mC-Print3 carries an IPX2 splash proof rating, uses soft operating switches rather than exposed mechanical buttons, raises the control board clear of any liquid that gets inside, and includes insect prevention around the openings. Paper also loads and feeds from the front, so the printer can go under a shelf where a top-loading printer would not fit.
What is Star CloudPRNT and do I need it?
CloudPRNT lets a web server send print jobs to the printer over the internet, with no POS terminal in the middle. If you run a cloud or browser-based point of sale, or you take online orders that need to print in the kitchen, that is what makes it work. If you run a traditional PC POS on the counter, you can ignore it and simply print over Ethernet or USB. It is built in either way, so it is there when you need it.
Does the mC-Print3 have Wi-Fi?
Not built in. This model covers Bluetooth, Ethernet, USB and Lightning. Star sells the optional MCW10 wireless LAN dongle if you need the printer on Wi-Fi, and we stock it. If Wi-Fi is your main connection method it is usually cleaner to look at a printer with the radio built in, such as the Star TSP143IV UEWB, though you would give up the splash proof cube design and the USB hub ports.
What paper does it use and how much space do I need?
Standard 80 mm direct thermal receipt rolls, loaded from the front. The printer itself is 132 mm wide, 140 mm deep and 125 mm tall, and because both the paper loading and the receipt exit are at the front, you do not need clearance above it. A 2 mm top margin and a receipt decurl function mean less wasted paper and flatter dockets.
What is the warranty?
Star Micronics Australia covers all of its printers with a 24 month warranty including parts and labour, so this printer is sold with a 24 Months Return to Base warranty. Keep your invoice, because a warranty claim needs proof of purchase showing the model and serial number.

Do not forget the paper

The mC-Print3 uses standard 80 mm direct thermal receipt rolls that load from the front, so keep a box on the shelf.
