Cordless 2D Imager

Cino FuzzyScan A678BT 2D Cordless Barcode Scanner

Qi wireless charging, Bluetooth to 100 metres through the Smart Cradle, and Cino's FuzzyScan engine behind the window. A cordless imager built so that the part which normally wears out is not there at all.

Most cordless scanners are judged on what they cost to buy. The A678BT is easier to judge on what it costs to keep. Cino has taken the charging contacts out of the design entirely and replaced them with Qi induction, which removes the component that generates most of the service calls on a cordless counter scanner and allows both the imager and the cradle to be moulded as sealed shapes. Everything else is the specification you would expect of Cino's deluxe compact range: a 1120 x 768 sensor, warm white illumination, 3.0 mil precision, a 1.8 metre drop rating and a choice of two completely different power sources.

What the A678BT does differently

Nothing to clean between shiftsCharging happens through the plastic by induction. There is no metal on either the imager or its cradle that needs wiping, scraping or eventually replacing.
Two ways to power itA 2,550 mAh lithium pack ships in the box. Cino's 750 Farad UltraCap capacitor drops into the same slot when fast top-ups matter more than a long unbroken run.
Pairs by reading a barcodeScanning the quick pair code on the cradle completes the link. Cino's ConnectWizard prints one for any other host, so there is no PIN and no driver in keyboard mode.
Carries on when the link dropsOut of range mode retains 5,000 EAN reads and flushes them on reconnection. A planned count can hold 100,000 in flash, with a quantity attached to each line.
Rated for the floor, not the deskRepeated 1.8 metre falls onto concrete, IP52 sealing and a 15kV electrostatic rating. The contactless design is what allows the enclosure to be moulded without crevices.
Decodes what the cheap ones refuseCino's FuzzyScan engine on a 1120 x 768 sensor under warm white light, reading creased, soiled, watermarked and screen-displayed codes down to 3.0 mil.

Why the contacts matter

Look at a three year old cordless scanner and the wear is almost always in the same place. Charging pins collect dust and grease, oxidise, and bend when a tired staff member drops the unit in at the wrong angle. The symptom arrives as a scanner that will not hold charge, and the fix is usually a new cradle rather than a clean. Induction charging has no such part, so that failure mode does not get better with maintenance, it simply does not exist. The second benefit is less obvious: with no contact block to mould around, the imager and the cradle can be closed up properly, which is where the dust, moisture and static ratings come from.

Running it across a shift

  • Between customers. The imager lives nose down in its cradle and takes charge every time it lands there, which is how a cordless unit stays usable without anyone thinking about batteries.
  • Away from the counter. Bluetooth 4.x over HID or SPP reaches up to 100 metres in open space through the cradle. Steel racking and solid walls cut into that figure, so treat it as a ceiling rather than a promise.
  • At the end of the day. A flat lithium pack takes 3 to 4 hours from the mains supply. A spare pack swaps in seconds, which is the usual answer on a site that runs two shifts.
  • When the radio is the problem. The imager has its own USB-C socket. Plug it straight into the host and it works as a wired scanner, and the same socket handles firmware and configuration.

The cradle scans too

The cradle is shaped to hold the imager at a working angle rather than simply to store it. Left in place it reads whatever is presented to it, so a queue of small items moves without anyone picking the scanner up, and lifting it out returns trigger scanning for a carton or an awkward shape. Two working styles come out of one purchase, which is worth remembering when comparing this against a corded scanner plus a separate stand.

Because the cradle carries the radio, it is also what gives the 100 metre figure. Pairing a unit directly to a host radio works, and reduces the range to whatever that host can manage.

This part number is the lithium build. The capacitor version is a separate Cino part, so tell us which way your site works and we will quote the one that fits.

Diagram of the USB-C socket on the base of the Cino A678BT imager, shown connected to a laptop and to a power bank

A socket on the imager itself

The USB-C port on the base turns the A678BT into a wired scanner whenever that is easier, takes a charge from any ordinary USB supply when the cradle is not nearby, and carries firmware and configuration without a special cable. On a site rolling out several units that last point saves more time than it sounds like it should.

Before you order

  • Confirm the host connection. The cradle speaks USB keyboard out of the box and also offers USB VCOM, USB OEM POS and standard RS232. Tell us which one your software expects and we will confirm the part before it ships.
  • Think about how far it travels. Range figures assume line of sight. If the imager has to work across a yard, through racking or between floors, describe the site and we will be straight with you about what will happen.
  • Decide how it gets its power. Lithium for a long run away from the cradle, UltraCap where the imager returns often and battery replacement over the years is the cost you want to remove. The two are interchangeable later.
  • Count the spares you need. A second battery and a spare mains supply cost far less than an idle counter. Both are on the add-on list on this page.

Frequently asked questions

Will it work if my computer has no Bluetooth?
Yes. The cradle is the radio. It plugs into the host and presents the imager as an ordinary keyboard, so an older till with no wireless hardware at all runs this scanner without any change. Direct pairing to a host radio is there as an alternative, not a requirement.
How quickly can a new unit be put to work?
Plug the cradle in, scan the pair code printed on it, and start scanning. In keyboard mode nothing is installed on the host, so a replacement unit on a counter is a two minute job rather than an IT ticket.
What actually happens at the edge of range?
Reads keep working and are held in memory, up to 5,000 of them, then transmit automatically once the link returns. That behaviour has to be enabled, so tell us if you want the imagers configured that way before they are despatched.
Can I do a stocktake with it away from the till?
Yes. Batch mode writes every read to the imager's own flash, up to 100,000 lines, and you can attach a count to each one as you go. The whole batch is sent to the host in one pass afterwards.
Is the capacitor version worth it?
It depends on how the imager is used, not on the price. A capacitor is worth it where the unit is picked up, used for a few minutes and put back, because it refills in under a minute and never needs replacing. A lithium pack is better where the unit leaves the counter for hours at a time.
What happens when a battery eventually dies?
You fit a new BT2100 pack, which is a user replaceable part and is listed on this page as an add-on. Nothing is soldered in and nothing has to go back to the manufacturer for it.
Does it cope with codes on a customer's phone?
Yes. It is an imaging scanner with warm white illumination, which Cino specifies for digital displays as well as print. Tickets, loyalty passes and click and collect codes all read from a screen.
What is covered by the warranty?
A 36 Months Return to Base term, three years, on the imager and its cradle. Batteries sit outside it because a cell is consumed by its charge cycles rather than failing, which is the normal position across the industry. Return to base means the unit comes back to us for assessment, repair or replacement.
Can we standardise a fleet on one configuration?
Yes. Cino's iCode puts an entire setup into a single barcode, so every unit is configured by one scan rather than by hand. DataWizard Premium then reshapes the output, which is how you make a scanner fit software that expects data in a particular format without touching the software.
Spares and cablesAdd a second BT2100 battery, a replacement mains supply, or a USB or RS232 cable for the cradle from the add-on list on this page. Stock and pricing update with the scanner, so what you see is what is on the shelf.
